Cherry blossoms have been revered by the Japanese for centuries. They are a token of good fortune, love, affection, and springtime. They are also symbolic of life’s fragile beauty and fleeting nature. They are often depicted in Japanese art, music, kimono, dishware, and stationery. You can even find cherry blossoms on the 100 yen coin. One cultural tradition we enjoyed seeing is hanami, or “flower viewing.” It involves gathering with family and friends to picnic on a tarp underneath the cherry trees. (Note: like entering a Japanese home, be sure to slip off your shoes before sitting on the tarp.)
