A Day in Asakusa

We decided to venture out with some friends to visit a district of Tokyo. As we got off the train, we were told there was going to be a parade later on in the day. We were excited to see some local festivities, and while we waited we took in the sights. The major attractions are Nakamise Shopping Arcade, Sensoji Temple, with its Kaminarimon Gate, and the Five-Storied Pagoda. As we got back to the parade route, we realized we had made a major blunder. This was a parade. In Tokyo. Literally thousands of people come from far away to see the sights each and every day. This is the best view we got, and that was when Ryan stood on his tippy toes with his arms stretched as far as they would go. So we left. But at least we beat some of the traffic home on the train, and had a few inches of personal space to boot.

Déjà vu

passport
Due to a major oversight on my part, I traveled to Japan carrying a passport with just my maiden name on it. Thanks to a quick-thinking and gracious airline employee, my name was changed on my flight ticket to match my passport. So I’m back in my mission with the same last name. I’m also getting used to riding a bike again, only this time I get to wear pants! The biggest difference is that I’m here with my husband, and as long as I’m with him, there’s no place I’d rather be.

We're In Japan!

Attempting to be patient while we wait for a child is much harder than we anticipated. But we’ve been blessed with a major distraction: temporary duty in Japan! This is a dream come true for Tawny, who has been missing Nihon for exactly seven years. The flight over was almost eleven hours long. It went by quickly due to the in-flight movie system. Everyone had a little TV screen and could choose one of 20 different movies. We only got through four of them. It was nice catching up on our movies since we have been too busy to watch any lately. Once we landed, we had to wait an hour to catch a bus that would take us to Yokosuka. The ride then took about two hours. Even though we were exhausted when we finally got to sleep, we both felt like it was the longest night ever. Now that we are here, Tawny is trying to get her Japanese groove back and Ryan is curiously exploring the food, culture, weather, and transportation.
